Staff Management

All members of staff have employment contracts which explain clearly what their job requires. New members of staff and volunteers have an induction plan to ensure their smooth integration into the Preschool.

The Preschool often operates over the required staffing levels. This gives the manager time to regularly observe activities and interaction with the children and members of staff. This means that good practice can be shared quickly with the team and any improvements required, can be quickly and smoothly implemented.

In an industry with high staff turnover, we have minimised turnover by promoting good staff relations, in an environment where staff are encouraged to share ideas and suggest improvements. Regular weekly staff meetings are held to discuss ideas, share development opportunities, review plans for the curriculum and continue to improve existing practice where required.

We have a supervision & appraisal system where we encourage staff development and support.

Volunteers, students and parent helpers

Historically, the Preschool has needed volunteers and still does from time to time. All volunteers have a current DBS and disqualification certificate and are never left alone with a child. (Please refer to our Child Protection Policy for more information. All volunteers also complete an induction period with us.

Students who are studying for childcare qualifications may work with us on student placements. Please refer to the Student Placements Policy for more information. No student is left alone with a child. Students who are 18 years or over need a DBS check prior to working with us.

We encourage parents to get involved with the Preschool, especially to assist with outings/trips in the local area. Our parent representatives meet regularly in the Parent & Supporters forum to ensure that parental input is reflected in all that we do. There are other opportunities for parents to help in practical ways which we welcome e.g. linked to the topic, helping with outings, fundraising etc. We also regularly ask parents for suggestions and evaluations.
